MEXICO to buy additional 250,00o m/t fueling world prices of sugar.

Mexico sets 250,000 tonne 2010 sugar import quota
Sun Feb 7,

MEXICO CITY, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Mexico opened an additional sugar import quota of 250,000 tonnes for 2010 to cover an expected shortfall in the domestic harvest, the economy ministry said on Sunday.
The ministry said the quota would run until May 20.
Mexico's 2009/10 sugar harvest is forecast to come in as low as 4.5 million tonnes, below the 4.97 million previously estimated by the national sugar council, due to bad weather and aging cane fields. Sugar prices have risen to 29-year highs in recent weeks. (Reporting by Catherine Bremer, editing by Maureen Bavdek)
